Most "free" online image tools upload your photo to their servers to do the work. That means a private document, a customer's product shot or a picture of your family passes through — and is often stored on — someone else's computer. ClearBG is built the opposite way: the processing runs inside your own browser, so the image never leaves your device.

That single design choice is what makes ClearBG genuinely private. There is nothing to sign up for, no image is transmitted, and there is no server-side copy to leak, cache or train on. What 'runs on your device' means technically

Where the computation physically happens

A conventional image service accepts an upload, processes the file on a server it controls, and sends a result back. Your file exists on that machine for at least the duration of the job, and in practice for as long as the operator's retention policy says.

These tools compile the same work — segmentation models, image codecs, PDF rendering, text recognition — to WebAssembly and run it inside the browser tab. The file is read from disk into the page's memory, transformed there, and written back out. There is no request carrying it anywhere, because no part of the pipeline lives anywhere else.

Why this is a structural property, not a policy

A privacy policy is a promise about what a company will do with data it already holds. It can be revised, misapplied, or made irrelevant by a breach or an acquisition, and none of those events require anyone to act in bad faith.

An architecture that never receives the data has nothing to revise. The distinction matters most for exactly the files people are most careful with — identity documents, medical letters, photographs of children — and it is the one claim an upload-based competitor cannot copy without rebuilding their product.

What the server still sees

It would be dishonest to claim nothing is observable. Requesting a page is a request, so the hosting provider sees an IP address, a timestamp and which URL was fetched, exactly as it does for any website.

The AI model weights are fetched once from a public CDN, so that CDN sees a download of a public file. What none of them see is your image, because it is never part of any request.

The costs of doing it this way

Local processing is a real trade rather than a free win, and it is worth being straight about the losses.

The first background removal downloads a model, which is a genuine wait on a slow connection.
Your device does the work, so an old phone is slower than a rented GPU would be.
Very large files are bounded by the tab's memory rather than by a server's.
Cloud services with far larger models beat these tools on the hardest inputs.

Are my images really not uploaded?

How can it be free if nothing is uploaded?

Is this safe for sensitive documents?

Yes — that's the main reason to use it. Because the file never leaves your device, redacting an ID, stripping GPS data from a photo or cleaning up a bank statement is far safer than on a tool that uploads.
