What marketplaces actually require

Amazon is the strictest and therefore the useful target: the main image must sit on pure white (RGB 255,255,255), the product must fill about 85% of the frame, and no text, watermark, border, prop or additional item may appear. Meeting that automatically satisfies eBay and Etsy, which are looser.

The 85% rule is the one people miss. A cut-out composited onto a large white canvas with generous margins technically has a white background and still fails, because the product is too small in the frame. Crop tight after removing the background, not before.

Why the background looks grey before you remove it

Even shot on white card under good light, your background will land around RGB 240 rather than 255 — card reflects less light than a perfect white, so the camera records a light grey. Next to a competitor's true-white listing it reads as dingy.

Removing the background and compositing onto pure white closes that gap exactly, which is why this step is standard practice for marketplace sellers rather than a shortcut. What marketplaces prohibit is misrepresenting the product, not editing the backdrop.

Where cut-outs go wrong on products

Three failure modes account for almost everything, and all are visible only at full zoom — which is exactly the view a buyer gets:

• A pale halo around the outline, left by background colour still sitting in the semi-transparent edge pixels. Most obvious on dark products shot on white.
• Reflective and chrome surfaces, which show the background inside the product, so parts of the item get cut away with it.
• Transparent packaging, glassware and mesh, where a pixel is genuinely both product and background at once. No automatic tool resolves these cleanly.

Batch work without a per-image cost

A catalogue is where this stops being a single edit and becomes a workflow. Because removal runs on your own device, there is no per-image charge and no rate limit — a few hundred shots is a matter of waiting rather than budgeting.
