Arranging photos into a grid
Pick a layout for the number of photos
Some counts arrange more comfortably than others. Two, three, four, six and nine sit naturally in regular grids; five and seven do not, and usually need one cell given more weight than the rest.
The reliable approach for an awkward count is a feature layout — one large image with the others in a column or strip beside it. That reads as deliberate, where a grid with one empty cell reads as a mistake.
Gutters and consistency
The space between images does more work than people expect. Zero gap makes a collage read as a single composite image, which suits a panorama or a sequence. A visible, even gutter separates the photos into distinct frames, which suits a set of unrelated shots.
What matters most is that the gutter is even. Uneven spacing is one of those things nobody consciously notices and everybody registers as amateurish. The same applies to the outer margin: it should match the internal gutters, or be deliberately larger, but never slightly different.
Cropping inside cells
Photos in a grid must fill their cells, and unless your source images happen to match the cell ratio, something has to give. Filling the cell and cropping the overflow keeps the grid clean but can cut heads off; fitting the whole image inside leaves letterbox bars.
Fill-and-crop is almost always the better choice, but it needs checking per cell. The common failure is a portrait photo dropped into a landscape cell, where a centre crop removes the top of someone's head.
Sizing the export
A collage's output resolution multiplies: a 3 × 3 grid at 1000 pixels per cell is a 3000-pixel image before gutters. That is often larger than needed and slow to upload.
Decide the final display size first and work back. For a social post, 1080 pixels on the longest side is plenty regardless of how many photos are in it — each cell only needs a few hundred pixels. For print, work from the physical size at 300 DPI instead.
