Adjustments versus looks

Two different things get called filters. Adjustments — exposure, contrast, saturation, temperature — are corrections that move an image towards what it should have looked like. Looks are stylistic presets that move it somewhere deliberately different.

The order matters. Correct first, then style. A preset applied to an underexposed, colour-cast photo bakes those problems in and makes them harder to fix, because the preset has already redistributed the tones you needed to work with.

What each slider actually does

Knowing the mechanism makes the results predictable:

• Exposure shifts every tone up or down together, and clips highlights or shadows once they hit the ends of the range.
• Contrast pushes tones away from the middle — brights brighter, darks darker — which also increases apparent saturation as a side effect.
• Saturation scales all colour intensity uniformly, so already-vivid colours clip first. Vibrance boosts the muted ones more than the vivid ones, which is why it is gentler on skin.
• Temperature and tint correct colour casts along the blue–orange and green–magenta axes respectively.
• Sharpening increases contrast at edges. It adds no detail, and overdone it produces bright halos along high-contrast boundaries.

Where over-editing shows first

Skin tones and skies are the two places that give away a heavy hand. Skin turns orange with too much saturation or warmth and grey-green with too much correction the other way; the eye is extremely well calibrated for this and forgiving of almost nothing.

Skies band. A gradient pushed hard runs out of intermediate values, and the smooth transition becomes visible steps — made worse by any subsequent lossy compression, which handles gradients badly to begin with.

Edit non-destructively where you can

Every adjustment discards information: pushed highlights clip, crushed shadows merge, and neither comes back by moving the slider the other way. Doing it repeatedly on a saved JPEG compounds the loss with compression damage.

Work from the highest-quality original each time rather than re-editing an export, and keep that original untouched. If you are producing several versions of one image, generate each from the master instead of editing one into the next.
