How to check a no-upload claim yourself

Watch the network panel

Every browser ships developer tools with a network tab that lists every request the page makes. Open it, clear it, then run the tool on an image and watch what appears.

A tool that processes locally shows requests for its own code and assets and then nothing while the work happens. A tool that uploads shows a request carrying a payload roughly the size of your file — which is unmistakable, because a photograph is orders of magnitude larger than the page's own traffic.

The offline test is simpler and harder to fake

Load the page, then disconnect from the network entirely, then use the tool. Software that needs a server cannot work without one, so if the result still appears, the computation happened on your machine.

This is a stronger check than reading any policy, because it tests the thing itself rather than a description of it. The one caveat is the first run, which may need to fetch a model before it can go offline.

What a claim of deletion actually promises

Services that upload frequently promise deletion after an interval — an hour, a day. That is a meaningful commitment and a much weaker one than it sounds: it concedes the file was transmitted, stored, and readable by that system for the window in question.

It also cannot cover copies that left the primary store: backups, logs, the CDN, a queue, an error report containing the file. Deletion is a process rather than an event, which is why not receiving the file is a different category of assurance.

Signals that a tool is not local

Some behaviours are only possible with a server, whatever the marketing says.

  • A progress bar that tracks 'uploading' rather than processing.
  • A result delivered as a link to a hosted file rather than a direct download.
  • A hard file-size cap in the low megabytes — a server cost, not a browser limit.
  • An account requirement for processing, which implies work tied to an identity.
  • Nothing works with the network off, after the page has loaded.
