The fields that actually matter

Cameras and phones write a block of metadata into every photo. Most of it is harmless — exposure, focal length, orientation. Three fields are not: GPS coordinates, the timestamp, and the device identifier.

The coordinates are precise enough to identify a building, and a photo taken indoors is usually taken at home. A set of photos shared over months carries a movement history nobody intended to publish, which is the part people underestimate.

Which platforms strip it, and why that is not a plan

Large social networks generally strip metadata on upload, partly for privacy and partly because they re-encode everything anyway. That protects the public copy and nothing else.

The file you emailed, put in a shared folder, sent over a chat app that preserves originals, or attached to a marketplace listing keeps every field. Stripping before sending is the only approach that does not depend on each destination's current behaviour.

Why stripping costs no quality on a JPEG

A JPEG is a sequence of marker segments, and metadata lives in its own segments alongside the compressed image data. Removing them is a matter of dropping those segments and rewriting the file — the pixels are never decoded, so there is no re-encode and no generational loss.

This is worth knowing because the alternative people reach for — opening the photo in an editor and re-saving it — does re-encode, and loses a little quality every time.

What metadata will not tell you

Absent metadata is not evidence of anything. Screenshots never had any, messaging apps remove it, and any re-save can drop it, so a photo with no EXIF is unremarkable rather than suspicious.

Equally, present metadata is not proof: every field is editable. It is a convenience for organising your own photos and a privacy risk when sharing, and it is not a chain of custody.
