Resizing well

Down is safe, up is not

Making an image smaller derives every output pixel from real measured data, so it is the safe direction. It can even improve apparent quality, since averaging groups of pixels reduces noise — a high-ISO photo often looks cleaner at half size.

Enlarging is a different problem. The detail was never captured, so it has to be invented: classical resampling does it softly, producing a bigger but blurrier image. Around 2× is the practical ceiling for anything that must look natural.

Keep the aspect ratio

Changing width and height by different amounts stretches the image, and people are extremely good at spotting it — a face a few percent too wide looks wrong even to someone who cannot say why.

When a destination demands an exact ratio your original does not have, crop to that ratio first and then resize, rather than stretching to fit. You lose some framing and keep the proportions.

Resize before compressing, not after

File size is driven far more by pixel count than by the quality setting, so reducing dimensions to what will actually be displayed usually clears an upload limit on its own.

The common mistake is to keep full dimensions and push quality down until the file fits, which produces a large, artefact-ridden image where a smaller clean one would have looked better and weighed less.

Sharpening comes last

Downscaling softens an image slightly — that is inherent to averaging pixels together — so a light sharpen afterwards is normal and appropriate.

Doing it in the other order does not work: sharpening before you downscale amplifies noise and edge detail that the resize is about to average away, and can leave visible halos around high-contrast edges.
