Beautify a Screenshot

The problem is the edge, not the content

A raw screenshot is a rectangle of interface that ends abruptly at the crop. Placed on a page or a slide it reads as a fragment: nothing indicates where the interface stopped and the document began, so the eye treats the boundary as damage.

Padding on a contrasting backdrop fixes this by giving the rectangle somewhere to sit. That is the entire mechanism behind the polished look — the screenshot has not been improved, it has been framed.

Shadow and radius do the separating

A soft drop shadow lifts the image off the background and makes the boundary intentional rather than accidental. It wants to be large and faint; a tight dark shadow looks like a sticker.

Rounded corners work because almost every interface being screenshotted already has them, so square corners on the export contradict the content inside. Matching the radius roughly to the window's own is enough.

Capture at the resolution you will publish

Screenshots are pixel data, so an image captured small and enlarged afterwards has soft text that no amount of framing rescues. Capture on a high-density display, or zoom the interface before capturing, and scale down rather than up.

Text is also the reason to export PNG. It is nothing but hard edges, which is where JPEG puts visible speckle around every character, and where lossless compression is small anyway because interfaces are mostly flat colour.

Check the frame before you publish it

Screenshots leak more than any other image type, because the whole screen was captured and only the middle was examined.

• Open tabs, bookmarks and the window title.
• Notification banners that arrived during the capture.
• Autofill suggestions and browser history in a dropdown.
• Real names, email addresses and internal URLs in the interface itself.
