Turning a signed page into a usable signature

Sign on unlined white paper

The quality of a digital signature is set before you photograph it. Use a black or dark blue pen with a reasonably thick stroke on plain, unlined white paper — ruled or squared paper leaves lines that have to be cleaned up individually.

Sign larger than usual. A big signature photographed and scaled down looks crisp; a small one photographed and enlarged looks soft and pixellated, and the thin parts of the stroke break up.

Photograph it flat and evenly lit

Shoot from directly above with the camera parallel to the paper. Photographing at an angle skews the signature into a trapezoid, and the correction never looks quite right.

Even light matters more here than anywhere else, because a shadow across the page becomes a grey wash across the cut-out. Daylight from a window with the paper away from your own shadow is ideal; overhead room lighting with you leaning over the page is the usual cause of a muddy result.

What a clean signature file looks like

The result should be the ink alone on transparency, with no paper tone and no grey box, so it can be placed over any document background — including the coloured or watermarked pages many contracts use.

Check the thin strokes at full zoom. The delicate parts of a signature, where the pen lifted, are exactly what an over-aggressive cut-out removes, and a signature missing its tapering strokes looks visibly altered.

Keep the file private

A signature is one of the few images where the file itself is a security concern: anyone holding a clean transparent PNG of your signature can place it on any document.

That is a direct argument for processing it on your own device rather than uploading it to a service, and for being deliberate about where the finished file is stored and who it is sent to.
