Canva is a full design suite, but its background remover is a Pro (paid) feature, it requires an account, and your images are stored in its cloud. If you mainly need quick, private image tools, that's a lot of overhead.

ClearBG focuses on doing those image jobs instantly and privately: no login, no subscription, and nothing uploaded. It won't design a poster for you — but for cut-outs, resizing, converting and compressing, it's faster and free.

Design suites and utilities solve different problems

Composition versus a single transformation

A design suite exists to help you make something new: a layout with type, shapes, images and a brand system, assembled on a canvas and revisited over time. That work needs projects, templates, fonts and collaboration, and a cloud account is a reasonable price for it.

A utility exists to apply one transformation to a file you already have. Cropping to an exact ratio or stripping a background is a job with a beginning and an end, and wrapping it in a document model adds steps rather than capability.

The account is the actual difference

Cloud design tools require an account because the document lives on their servers — that is what makes it openable from another machine and editable with a colleague. The requirement follows from the feature.

For a one-off transformation the same requirement is pure overhead: a signup, a verification email and a stored copy of your image, in exchange for an operation that finishes in seconds and produces a file you download immediately.

Where the free tier tends to stop

Free tiers of design suites are generous with templates and restrictive at the export step, which is where the value is captured — resolution limits, watermarks, or a background-removal feature reserved for the paid plan.

That is a coherent business model and it means the last step of your work is the one you cannot finish. A utility with nothing to sell has no reason to place a gate there.

Using both, which is the usual answer

These are complements far more often than alternatives.

  • Cut out, crop, compress or convert the asset here, with no account and at full resolution.
  • Take the finished asset into a design tool for layout, type and brand work.
  • Keep sensitive source images out of a cloud project by transforming them locally first.
  • Use a design suite when the output is a composition; use a utility when it is a file.
