Formats a browser already understands
Browsers ship with decoders and encoders for the image formats the web runs on, and a canvas can move pixels between them. That covers the overwhelming majority of real conversion requests — JPEG, PNG, WebP and, in current browsers, AVIF.
Formats the browser does not know can still be handled by shipping a decoder compiled to WebAssembly, which is how HEIC from an iPhone and PDF rendering work here. The cost is a one-time download of that decoder.
Where a conversion service is genuinely the right tool
General-purpose converters cover hundreds of formats, including proprietary and professional ones — CAD drawings, camera raw files from every manufacturer, legacy office documents, archive video codecs.
Supporting that breadth means running a large collection of specialised binaries, which is server work. If you need a Photoshop file flattened or a raw file developed, that is what those services are for and a browser is not a substitute.
Queues, quotas and the round trip
