Getting under 100 KB
An aggressive target that changes the approach
100 KB is tight. It appears on older government portals, some exam and visa application systems, forum avatars and legacy content systems, and unlike a 1 MB limit it cannot usually be met by resizing alone.
At this budget you are deciding what to sacrifice rather than finding a free win, and the right answer depends entirely on what the image is.
Dimensions first, and be ruthless
File size scales with pixel count, so this is still the most powerful lever by a wide margin. For a 100 KB target, something in the range of 600–1000 pixels on the longest side is usually where you need to be.
That is smaller than feels comfortable, but a clean 800-pixel image at quality 80 looks considerably better than a 2000-pixel image mangled down to the same file size. Resolution you cannot afford to keep is worth giving up before quality is.
Then format, then quality
Switching format is the next lever and often decisive at this size. WebP saves 25–35% over JPEG at matched quality, and AVIF more again — at 100 KB that difference is the whole margin.
Quality comes last, and 70–75 is about as low as photographic content goes before artefacts become distracting. Below 60 you get visible blockiness in smooth areas and haloing around edges.
Know when the content will not cooperate
Some images cannot reach 100 KB while remaining useful. A detailed scanned document, a screenshot full of small text, or a photograph with fine repeating texture will either stay large or become unreadable.
When a form demands 100 KB for a document scan, the answer is usually to crop to just the region that matters and reduce to grayscale rather than compress the whole page harder. Both cut size substantially without touching legibility, which is the thing that actually has to survive.
