Why PNGs get so large

PNG compresses patterns, not photographs

PNG is lossless: it reconstructs your pixels exactly. It achieves that by finding repetition — runs of identical colour, rows that resemble the row above — and encoding those patterns compactly.

A screenshot of a code editor is full of such repetition and compresses beautifully. A photograph has almost none: sensor noise means adjacent pixels differ slightly everywhere, so PNG ends up storing something close to raw pixel data. This is why a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than a visually identical JPG.

The fix depends on the content

Before compressing, decide which kind of PNG you have. If it is a photograph, the format is the problem and no amount of PNG optimisation will fix it — convert to JPG or WebP and expect an 80–90% reduction with no visible change.

If it is a screenshot, logo, diagram or anything with sharp edges and flat colour, PNG is the right format and should stay. Lossy compression would put visible haloing around text and edges.

Compressing a PNG that should stay a PNG

Two levers work without changing format. The first is dimensions: a screenshot from a high-density display is often twice the resolution it needs to be, and halving it cuts the file to roughly a quarter.

The second is colour depth. A PNG storing 16 million colours for an image that only uses forty is wasting most of its palette. Reducing to an indexed palette is technically lossy but often visually identical on flat-colour graphics, and can cut the file dramatically. On photographs it produces obvious banding, so it is a graphics technique only.

Keep the transparency in mind

The one thing that must survive is the alpha channel. Converting a transparent PNG to JPG discards it entirely and the background comes back as solid white or black.

If you need both small size and transparency, lossy WebP is the answer — it carries a full alpha channel at a fraction of PNG's size, and every current browser supports it. Keep the PNG as your master for anything you will hand to someone else.
