Getting the most out of WebP

Two modes, two different jobs

WebP is unusual in offering both lossy and lossless compression in one format, and choosing the wrong mode is the main way people fail to get the benefit.

Lossy WebP is for photographs, where it typically produces files 25–35% smaller than a JPEG of equivalent visual quality. Lossless WebP is for screenshots, logos and flat-colour graphics, where it beats PNG by roughly 20–25% while preserving every pixel.

The capability nothing before it had

WebP's genuinely new trick is lossy compression with an alpha channel. Before it, a cut-out with a transparent background had to be PNG, and was therefore large.

As lossy WebP the same cut-out can be a fraction of the size while looking identical, which makes it the correct format for transparent images on the web. This matters most for product cut-outs, logos and any image composited over a page background.

Where WebP is the wrong answer

Browser support has been universal since 2020, so for anything you serve on a website WebP is safe. Outside the browser it is patchier than people assume.

Plenty of desktop software, print workflows, older content systems and upload forms still reject it. The rule that avoids trouble: WebP for images you serve, JPG or PNG for images you hand to someone else.

Converting to WebP without losing twice

Converting an existing JPEG to lossy WebP means two lossy passes, and the second one inherits the first one's artefacts. The saving is usually still worth it, but the result is never as good as encoding WebP from an original.

Where you have the master — a PNG, a camera file, an editor export — convert from that instead. And if the source is a PNG of a graphic rather than a photo, use lossless WebP: converting it to lossy will put haloing around exactly the sharp edges PNG was protecting.
