Compressing JPEGs without compounding damage
Your JPEG is already compressed
This is what makes JPEGs different from other compression jobs: the file has already been through a lossy pass. Re-saving it applies a second, and the second pass works on data that already contains artefacts, which it treats as real detail worth preserving while discarding something else.
The damage accumulates and never comes back. Ten saves at quality 90 produce a visibly worse image than one save at quality 60, despite the higher nominal setting each time.
So compress once, from the best source
If you still have the original — the camera file, the export from your editor, a PNG master — compress from that rather than from a JPEG that has already been through the mill.
When the JPEG is all you have, make one pass and accept the result rather than nudging the slider repeatedly and re-saving. Each attempt costs quality even if the number goes up.
Where the quality scale bites
For photographic content: 90–80 is visually indistinguishable at roughly half the file size, 80–70 softens fine texture slightly, 70–60 makes artefacts visible in skies and skin, and below 60 blockiness is obvious.
The scale is non-linear because the quality number scales a quantisation table rather than removing a fixed fraction of data. That is why dropping from 100 to 85 costs almost nothing visible and dropping from 70 to 55 costs a great deal.
Resize first, and consider switching
Reducing dimensions is more powerful than reducing quality, because file size scales with pixel count. Bringing a 4000-pixel photo down to 1600 usually clears a size target on its own, at no perceptible cost.
And if the destination accepts it, converting to WebP typically saves another 25–35% at matched visual quality — often enough to avoid lowering the quality setting at all. Keep JPEG when the file is going somewhere you do not control, since it is the format that always works.
